Obituary of Joseph S. Charles

Please share a memory of Joseph to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Joseph Simon Charles, 58, of Tunkhannock, died August 4th, 2017 at Wilkes Barre General Hospital having lost a short battle with cancer. He left the Earth peacefully while surrounded by his loving family.

Born on November 20, 1958, in Meshoppen, son of the late Charles J. and Renee Shibley Charles, he was co-owner of the Charles Brothers’ Super Market until it’s closing in 1992. Continuing on in the grocery business he spent several years working for Sunshine Markets. Joe later went on to work at Gateway Ford where he made many loyal customers in his 22 years of dedicated service.

“The Dance of Life” was not just a dance but the way Joe lived his life. Joe’s love for his wife and children was unwavering. Joe and Laurie enjoyed driving in his convertible, listening to Bruce Springsteen, and cherishing their time spent together. He was very active in his children’s lives; coaching many sports teams and sitting through countless dance recitals. Along the way he became a “second father” to his children’s friends and a favorite uncle to his treasured nephews. Joe and his sisters maintained a strong and loving bond his entire life. He was blessed with two beautiful grandchildren who enjoyed their “Jiddo” time.

Joe was family to more than just his relatives.  He made friends wherever he went and left an impact on everyone. Whether you were with him golfing at Stonehedge or tailgaiting at Penn State, when you were around Joe, you were laughing and smiling. He had a natural ability to bring light and happiness to those around him and will always be remembered as the life of the party.

Joe is survived by his wife of 32 years, Laura Lewis Charles, his children, Kathlyn and husband Steve Fisher of Dunmore, daughter, Melissa of Tunkhannock and son, Adam of Tunkhannock, sisters and brothers in-law, LeDonne and Michael Kelly of Shavertown and Mary Clare and Will Thomas of Tunkhannock, grandchildren, Carter and Evelyn Fisher, nephews and nieces, Matt Kelly, Earl and Michael Thomas, John, Michael and Steven Danko, Michael, Christopher and Michele Kelly and Karen Tracy.
