Herbert (Huggie) Hug of Lake Winola formerly of Scranton died Saturday in the Hospice unit at Community Medical Center in Scranton. Surviving is his wife Ruth A. O’Dell Hug they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on April 26, 2008. He was born in Scranton on May 18, 1930 son of the late Herbert and Bertha Haussman Hug Sr. He was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School Class of 1948 and a veteran of the United States Navy. Prior to his retirement he was employed by National Cash Register of Dayton Ohio for 44 years retiring in 1993 after working in numerous banks and business. After his retirement he worked part time for the Community Bank and Trust Co. in Lake Winola. He served as a School Board Director in the Falls-Overfield School District in Mill City and later served as School director of the Tunkhannock School District after their merger. He always felt that Lake Winola should have free phone service to Tunkhannock and after much effort and many hours of hard work and determination he was able to accomplish it. Herb enjoyed being evolved in the activities of his children starting up a Cub Scout Troop since he himself was an Eagle Scout. He served as 4H Leader, was a member of the Oriental Grange #45 and the Susquehanna County Bee Association. He was a member of the Sheep and Wool Association of Wyoming County holding the office of treasure, his sheep and sheep dogs were his favorite pass time. His favorite saying was “You get out of your community just what you put into it” A member of the Overfield Township Supervisor Vacancy Board, Past President and Charter Member of the Lake Winola Lions Club. Since 1979 he has served as Overfield Township Tax Collector and while taking many classes in taxes he organized the Wyoming County Tax Collector’s Assoc.. He held the office of President for many years and received his goal as Certified Tax Collector of Pennsylvania. He currently is serving as Vice President of the Pa. State Tax Collectors Association. He received a “Life Membership Award” from the Lake Winola Fire Co. where he is serving as Vice President. Herb finished his life doing good for his community by being treasure of the Fairview Cemetery Association of Lake Winola. He was preceded in death by a sister Dorothy Trievelpiece of Clark Summit, surviving is a daughter, Pamela and Husband Al Fagerlin, son Robert Sr. and wife Elaine Hug and grandson Robert Jr. , son Townsend (Tony) and wife, Shawnna Hug and granddaughters Nicole and Katelyn all of Lake Winola. Niece Debbie and husband Robert Hill, nephew Donnie and wife Alice Madden and Shelby all of Factoryville RD. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11 am from the Lake Winola United Methodist Church, Lake Winola. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery Lake Winola. Friends may call at the church on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Lake Winola Fire Co., PO box 73 , Lake Winola, Pa. 18625, Lake Winola Methodist Church, c/o Enola Hawk, RR#2, Dalton, 18414, St. Mary’s of the Lake Church, c/o Fran Mollusky, PO Box 63.
