Daniel Holod Sr., age 91 of Tunkhannock died Saturday morning in the Golden Living Center in Tunkhannock. Dan was born in Scranton on May 2, 1919 son of the late Daniel and Bernice Pacura Holod. He was raised in East Lemon on now what is Henry-Holod Road. Dan was a veteran of WW2 and served in England with the Army Air Corp attaining the rank of Sergeant in the squads that supported the bombing missions in Germany. Following VE day, he was on his way to the next mission in Japan when the war ended. Following the war, September 1, 1945, he married Bertha Stroka Holod of Sugar Hollow. Danny was initially employed by Gay Murrays’ Hardware working in the plumbing department. He later founded and owned Holod’s Plumbing Heating and Electrical that served many businesses and people in the area from 1950 until his retirement in 1984. He was a lifetime member and faithfully attended Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Tunkhannock. While in the service in the Army Air Corps he found a passion for flying and held a pilots license for many years following the war. He was known to make many fly-in breakfasts around the countryside. Dan was a 50 year member of the Tunkhannock Kiwanis club having served as president and he contributed greatly to the Wyoming County Fair set up when it was reintroduced in its present location. He and Bert loved to travel with friends and took several cross country trips with their travel trailer, including at least two trips to Alaska. They also spent many winters in Florida in their retirement. Dan had a passion for Salmon fishing in Alaska and for salmon in the Miramichi River in Nova Scotia. Dan along with close friends made many an annual pilgrimage to the north land coming back with coolers of salmon and with many stories and memories to share. He also enjoyed Notre Dame Football. He provided a good living for his family and proudly sent all four of his children through college. Above all he loved his family and traditional gatherings during special occasions and holidays. He was preceded in death by two brothers; Joseph and Michael Holod; five sisters Anna Swientisky, Mary Holst, Stella Lewis, Sally DeSanto, and Josephine Colan. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Bertha Stroka Holod; children Kathryn and husband Bill Burnell of Clarks Summit, Daniel W and wife Debra of Tunkhannock, Charles and wife Pam of Augusta Georgia, Douglas and wife Elizabeth of Saint Paul Minnesota, a sister Helen Poch of Caldwell NJ, six grandchildren and several step-grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 9:30 am from the Sheldon-Kukuchka Funeral Home, 73 W. Tioga St, Tunkhannock with a mass of Christian Burial at the Church of the Nativity BVM at 10 am. Interment will be in Sunnyside Cemetery Tunkhannock. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 6 – 9 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to the Church of the Nativity BVM Tunkhannock or to a charity of their choice.
