Obituary of M. Elizabeth Booth

M. Elizabeth Booth, age 100 a resident of Wesley Village, Pittston, Pa. formerly of Eagles Mere died Monday June 6 at Wesley Village. Elizabeth was born in Kingston, Pa. the daughter of George I. and Alice (Thomas) Van Buskirk. She was a 1929 graduate of Kingston High School and received her Normal School Teaching Certificate in 1931 from what is now known as Bloomsburg University. Elizabeth taught in public schools in Kingston, Eagles Mere and the East Lycoming School District. While working in the East Lycoming district she taught for several years at one of the last surviving one room school houses, the Frenchtown School. Documents indicate that it was built prior to the Civil War. On February 20, 1962, the day John Glenn first orbited the earth, she and her students moved into the 20th century by taking up residence at the newly completed Carl G. Renn Elementary School in Lairdsville, where she continued teaching until her retirement. Elizabeth lived most of her adult life in Eagles Mere, where she was an active member of the Federated Church and the Civic Club. She was always an avid reader and in her earlier years of her retirement took up painting. She and several friends from Eagles Mere journeyed to North Mountain to take lessons from famed local artist David Armstrong. Her other lifelong enjoyment was written correspondence with her family and a large circle of friends. Elizabeth was married to the late George E. Booth of Eagles Mere from 1944 until his death in 1977. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents and five of her six siblings. Surviving is a son Van and his wife Elizabeth J. (Toy) Booth of Factoryville, sister, Audrey F. Johnson, of Fairport, NY and many nieces and nephews. Family will receive friends at the Sheldon-Kukuchka Funeral Home Inc., 73 W. Tioga St. Tunkhannock on Friday evening from 7 to 9. A memorial service will be held at 11 am on June 27th from the Eagles Mere Community Church with Rev. Robert Brown officiating.
