Stanley L. Carter, age 91, of Tunkhannock PA and St. Albans Bay VT, formerly of Barre VT, passed away peacefully at home on January 16, 2013, surrounded by his loving family. He was preceded in death October 2009 by his wife of 64 years, Bernardine Gomez Carter. Stanley was born August 23, 1921 in St Albans VT, the son of the late Marvin and Mary Carter. He attended schools in St. Albans, but graduated from Montpelier HS in 1940 after his family relocated to Montpelier. Stanley proudly served his country during World War II in the Army Air Corps as a bombsight mechanic on the B-25 Mitchell. He was a recipient of the American Theater Service Medal with one Bronze star. At the end of the war he was one of the first members of the Montpelier VFW. Stanley married Bernardine Gomez in July of 1945. After leaving the service Stanley and Bernardine settled in Barre VT. He worked in the building industry as a master carpenter. He was the foreman for John Cook Construction. In 1970 Stanley left construction to become the Head of Maintenance for the Barre City School System. He retired in 1984. In January of 1987 Stanley and Bernardine relocated to Tunkhannock PA where they helped with their daughter’s bookstore. Stanley enjoyed boating, fishing, snowmobiling, ice fishing, traveling, crossword puzzles and building wooden boat models. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends at the camp he and Bernardine built on Lake Champlain. Stanley is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Pamela and Stephan Weiss of Tunkhannock PA and his daughter Elizabeth Cookson of South Barre VT. He is also survived by five granddaughters Kristin Kirchner of Tunkhannock PA, Rebecca Cookson of East Barre VT, Heather L. Weiss-Constable and her husband Jeff of Lynchburg OH, Mikaela Bolio and her partner Shawn Bates of South Barre VT and Ilona Amaral of South Barre VT; six great-grandchildren Samantha Davis and her husband Albie of Tunkhannock PA, Kyler and Bryant of Lynchburg OH, Jaime and Kylie of South Barre VT and Zavien of East Barre VT. He was looking forward to the birth of his first great-great-grandchild. He is also survived by his sisters Marjorie Freeman of Middlebury VT and Helen Kew of Barre VT, as well as two special daughters-by-choice, Linda Hoffman of Loveland OH and Mimi Kaufman Reel of Tunkhannock PA, as well as many nieces and nephews who were very special to him. He was predeceased by his brothers Eric and Marvin Carter and his sister Janice Perkins. Stanley was well loved and respected by everyone whose life he touched. To honor Stanley’s wishes there will be a celebration of his life with family and friends at his camp on Lake Champlain. There will be no calling hours or funeral.
