I just came across this and have to add my condolences. I also remember "Pete" and his store, having grown up on Loomis Avenue. He was a very kind man and it was the place to go before heading to the school bus stop in the morning. RIP
Thanks to those who have added photos...so nice to see.

Petey and Billy, My sincere condolences on the passing of your father. He will be always in my thoughts and in my prayers.
Uncle Pete was a great uncle. He will be remembered for his store by all his customers, his stories he told to me and Eddie on the store window sill will long be remembered, the Hedge Monster tales were the best, hiis accordion playing and singing with the family, the parties in back of the store, and his good will. God bless you Uncle Pete. Joe

Mr. Chapla, I am very sorry about the passing of your father. I lost my dad this past August. He was 88. Losing a parent at any age leaves an emptiness in our hearts. I hope he has left you with many special memories to cherish.

Dear Pete, Bill, Cathy, and Sara,
We were so saddened to here of the passing of our dear Uncle Pete. He always had a smile when he saw us. He took time to talk and listen. He was a caring man, especially with the kids. I remember the times he asked if anyone of the nieces or nephews you'd make a delivery for him. We all wanted to make a few pennies as a tip. The times he told stories when he wasn't busy in the grocery store were also wonderful memories. Dear Uncle Pete, you are gone but will never, never be forgotten.
Your Loving family on Loomis Ave.

This weekend we lost another great soul. Anyone who grew up or spent time in Lincoln Heights knew him and his store - and loved him. Among the neighborhood kids, he was famous for giving out Popsicles and penny candy and entertaining us with his great and, at the time scary, stories like the hedge monster. He had a great smile and had nothing but kindness in his heart. Uncle Pete, you will never be forgotten and will be greatly missed. RIP.
