Obituary of Sara J. Pownall
Sara Jane (Sally) Pownall, 74, of Tunkhannock Township, PA passed away on December 18, 2017.
Sally was born in Wilkes Barre, PA on January 13, 1943. She was preceded in death by her father Joseph Pownall, and her mother Jean (Horlacher) Pownall. She was blind from birth and also had developmental disabilities. Sally attended Perkins Institute for the Blind in Cape Cod, Massachusetts for kindergarten and first grade. Because of these limitations her parents cared for Sally in the family home until their deaths, Joseph in 1997 and Jean at age 86 in 2006. Jean said “Sally is good company!”
Since her mother's death Sally was lovingly cared for by the staff of Keystone Human Services at a group home in Tunkhannock Township. She enjoyed rides, shopping, eating out, and music, especially Christmas carols. She knew all the words! Her parakeet Puddin' provided company at home. Sally attended the Assembly of God Church and Bridgewater Church both in Tunkhannock.
On Sunday, December 18, Sally had a joyous reunion with her parents. As the burden of blindness and disability was at last lifted from her, she saw their smiles for the first time, and understood the amazing love that motivated the lifetime of care they had given her. At that time Sally also had the wonderful experience of seeing the beautiful face of her savior, king, friend, and brother, Jesus Christ.
The funeral service will be held at 12:00 noon on December 27th at the Assembly of God Church, 181 Bridge St, Tunkhannock, PA 18657 . Pastor Richard W. Womer will be officiating. There will be no visitation. Burial will take place at Sunnyside Cemetery, Tunkhannock. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Sheldon - Kukuchka Funeral Home
