Mr. Santee was my high school English teacher in Dunlap, IA in the late '60's. He has always stood out in my memory as a vital, enthusiastic, gifted teacher. He was one of the first I had encountered who challenged his students to think - not just memorize. My parents thought highly of him and Joan, and kept in touch with them for years.

I was shocked to read of Santee's transition in this week's paper. I am sooo glad it was published even though his time in this town was long ago, even before my time. I met him through a mutual friend and will always consider him one of my life hero's... truly an amazing, gifted, kind, generous, loving soul. A person of amazing courage, depth and integrity ... truly inspiring. It is a real statement of how far reaching he was to this planet to see where all of his connections have ended up. A life of real greatness, his light now becomes our responsibility to continue probing the darkness with. I'm so sad to know he is gone. I still think of him when I'm passing through the Florence area in Omaha, and whenever I laugh. He lives on in those eternal memories. I hope his family can remember his genuineness and compassion.... Wow... so sad. I'm glad he 'went home' to PA. so you could experience his magic ... .

Debbie & Family, I was so sorry to learn of Rich's passing. I worked with him at Buena Vista College many years ago. I am sure he will be missed by all his friends and family. He was a very good friend and co-worker for many years. I hope that it will help in some small way to know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. I still have a Santa Christmas Tree ornament that he made for me many years ago and it goes on my tree every year. Had not heard from Rich for sometime. Affectionately, Claudene Yost 600 Wright Road, Unit F Council Bluffs, IA 51501 712-328-3463

Mr. Santee was my high school French teacher in 1978, which I believe was his first year of teaching. He was a fantastic teacher, with tremendous kindness and enthusiasm. He and his wife took about 30 high school students on a field trip to Spain and France during our senior year. What a time we had! I truly admired him and his wife, and couldn't believe the patience and good humor they showed throughout the trip. I haven't seen him since graduation, but have thought of him many, many times. I'm glad to see that he touched so many other lives over the years. Adieu et reposer en paix.

I was shocked and saddened to read of my mentor's passing. I had lost track of him the last few years. He guided me through two years at Buena Vista and I am a successful teacher because of his devotion to the program and students. I have lots of happy memories. I can still see his smiling face. Thanks, Rich.

I worked with Rich at Lewis Central and our paths crossed again as he guided me though the ins and out of teaching while I was a student of his at Buena Vista. I am grateful to have known him and thankful he shared his gift of teaching with me. (I use his helpful hints even to this day.) I was sad to see his obituary in our newpaper. Rest in peace my friend.

Rich was my college advisor and also one of my teachers while I was earning my Bachelor's Degree in elementary education in Iowa. I always enjoyed his classes and fondly remember our class discussions of the English language. Rich was able to make dissecting sentences so much fun; I don't think any other teacher would have been able to do that. Rich was also the kind of person we knew we could go to if we had a question or problem, and he would always be there to help us. My classmates and I respected and loved him for the great teacher and advisor that he was to us. Even though it's been many years since I've seen him, I still find myself thinking about him and how he enriched the lives of so many future educators. I'm sure Rich touched many more lives as well and will be greatly missed.

Rich was my favorite teacher in high school 26+ years ago. He was the first truly compassionate, caring and genuine man I had ever met. His sensitive and creative soul lent itself to creating an amazing learning environment for his students. He was always there, helping students to learn and grow, always going the extra mile. He made a difference in my life, and I will never forget him. The loss of his bright light will be felt far and wide for a very long time.

When I heard that Rich passed away I was heartbroken. He had a profound impact on my life and is one of the reasons I became a teacher. I first met him in high school. He was my French teacher. He made learning a foreign language fun and was one of my favorite teachers. Later, he was my college advisor/teacher. He became my mentor and taught me how to be a good teacher through the lessons he taught and by his example. He always watched out for my best interests and I truly appreciated that. For many years I sent him a Christmas card letting him know what was happening in my life. I usually didn't get a card back from him but one year I did. He let me know that appreciated hearing from me every year. I'm sad to say that I lost touch with him when he moved back to Pennsylvania. He never knew that I got married and had a little girl. I wished I could have shared that with him. Rich touched many lives in the various careers he had. He made the world a better place. I am a better person and teacher because he was in my life. Rest in Peace Rich! I will miss you!!!

When I heard about Rich Santee's passing today I was heartbroken. He had a profound impact on me as a person and I am a better teacher today because of him. He was my French teacher in high school. I learned how to be an effective teacher because of the classes he taught and through his example. He was my mentor and always watched out for me. For many years I sent Christmas cards to him to let him know how my life was going and to see how he was doing. I only heard back from him once but that was OK with me. He wrote me a very nice letter that I still remember to this day. I lost touch with him when he moved back to Pennsylvania. He never knew that I got married and had a little girl.
