I have known Doug basically my whole lifetime! He was always “the big guy” in my thoughts. Obviously big all around! Big in being loved is the obvious but the biggest in giving love when he adopted Kerri berry because of his love all around!
May you rest peacefully dear soul!
Thought to Jane and the whole family!

Pop was a person who was always so full of life. Always knew the right things to say when he could tell you’re upset. No matter what the situation is I would always laugh when he was around. I can hear his voice in my head “How you been baby girl?”. Oh how that will be missed. Anywhere pop was there was always smiles on peoples faces. To what you call a star on your Christmas tree, he is mine. I will forever carry you in my heart. - Lexi

My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Doug was such a wonderful person; I remember him and Jane and his daughters from when I was growing up. We lived on the same road, and my best friend, Kristin, and I would walk down to visit them. Doug was a jolly and kind soul, always making us laugh. I will hold dear those memories. May God now have him safely in His arms, and bless all of you. -Jenifer

Some people are just Larger than Life!
My Friend Doug Spurlin was one of those guys.
He was the Big Brother I never had growing up.
He was my mentor.
He was my teacher.
When I first joined the West Babylon Fire Department in 1975, he was my Idol. I wanted to be just as great a Fire Fighter as he was.
We hit it off when we first met. I was maybe 17 years old at the time.
Doug took me under his wing, and taught me everything he knew about Firefighting.
He was tuff, determined! Tougher on me than any other kid. But he molded me to become a great firefighter!
He was almost always on the engine for night time fires. Heck, he lived right across from the firehouse. Late night early morning house fires always have the added potential of sleeping victims inside. Fortunately we never had the added horror of that encounter.
But we did come across some though challenging fires to put out.
As a Lieutenant and Captain he was always at the front of the hose line. He would look for me and with that determined look in his eye and that Doug smirk, say let’s go kid and push me right inside .
I honestly never really had any fear with him right there. He just made me feel like I could accomplish anything I wanted. And I did.
We became good friends for years. Not a family occassion or holiday, I wasn’t with him and his family. I taught his kids to ride bikes in the school down the block.
BBQs, boating, pools, fire department parades we were side by side, usually with a gin and tonic in hand. Our go to drink in the day.
No matter where you went with him, he was always the toughest bastard in the room. A No nonsense guy. He reminded me a lot of my Dad.
That bond and friendship lasted for years. He would eventually move to Pennsylvania and our friendship became occassional telephone calls.
He never knew the secret life I was living at the time and just like I thought my Dad couldn’t understand nor handle it, I dreaded him finding out and judging me for it.
We never discussed it really. It was like an unspoken thing. But of course he knew.
Doug was a funny, personable guy. I last saw him about a year or so ago at his first wife’s funeral.
Of course, it was like we never lost a day and in true Doug Spurlin, he made a snide, vague comment and boys being boys, with that typical Doug Smirk. I laughed, he laughed and then we drank.
That was the last time we spoke. Tonight, I’ll shed a few tears and remember quite fondly the best friend a guy could ever have!
Rest In Peace Doug!
